Announcing Auditions for
(a collection of short plays by Orange County Playwrights)
Boxcar Theatricals in partnership with the Orange County Playwrights Alliance are proud to present CURTAIN UP! A Collection of Short Plays by Orange County Playwrights! This exciting evening of theatre will include 8 short plays, directed by 4 different directors, starring 6 actors! Please review all of the following information and then SIGN UP for an audition!
Performance Location: Still being negotiated. Will be an outdoor space in Northern Orange County

Stipend: $125.00 total

Submission Instructions: performers have the opportunity to either submit a self tape or attend a live zoom audition on Saturday August 28th at 6:00 pm PST. Please indicate which you would prefer on your audition form (please do not sign up for both). Self tapes are due on Saturday August 28th at 6:00 pm.
SELF TAPE INSTRUCTIONS: Please record a slate stating your name, your height, and your city of residence. Then, film the two sides for the track that you most identify with. Please read the scenes with someone else reading the other lines. Please film landscape (horizontally) and be waist-up in the frame. We ask that you edit all clips together into one video and upload to YouTube as an UNLISTED video and paste the link to that video in the designated spot on your audition form.
ZOOM AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS: Please indicate on your audition form that you would prefer a Zoom audition and fill in any time conflicts you have for the evening of Saturday August 28th. A Boxcar representative will reach out to you with a zoom link and your appointment time. Please prepare both audition sides for the track you most identify with. A reader will be provided for this audition.
Audition Materials: for either the live audition or the self tape, please prepare the materials for the track that you most identify with. You can find the materials here. Materials do not need to be off book, but please be familiar with them.
COVID-19 Safety: Please be advised that ALL cast and crew of CURTAIN UP! must show proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination in order to participate in the event. Please also be aware that we will be enforcing the use of face coverings while working in indoor rehearsals. Failure to comply with these safety procedures will result in removal from the project.

ANTI-SOULMATE - A man meets his soulmate, who happens to be a woman that does not believe in soulmates. (Serio-Comedy)
COCONUTS AND CANDLES -Two WWII veterans reminisce on their years of service, and in the process reflect on a relationship that might have been. (Serio-Comedy/Drama)
I SAW WHAT YOU SAID - Two women who had a fight on Facebook run into each other in person and confront their differences. (Drama)
LOL - Two young people with smartphones encounter a crisis and struggle to do the right thing. (Comedy)
THE MILTON FERNSBY STORY - Two married couples reveal unexpected secrets while having a quirky dinner together. (Comedy)
PRUFROCK IN THE PARK - A socially anxious college student receives inspiration from a fictional literary character to help him talk to a girl he is attracted to. (Serio-Comedy)
REISMAN! - A group of professors discuss an academic conference and a mutually inspiring lecturer with a non-professor. (Drama)
STATE PARK - Two people explore the process and resulting feelings of meditation in a tent. (Serio-Comedy/Comedy)
18 to 30 years old, White male-presenting. Covers the following four characters-
Man, Anti-Soulmate: A hopeless romantic who is on a never-ending search to find his soulmate;
Jesse, Reisman!: New Junior Math Professor from a large university in the southwest. Eager to belong in academia. Tries to demonstrate his forthcoming significance.;
Brandon, Prufrock in the Park: a socially anxious college student who confides in a literary fictional character to build the courage to speak to his crush.;
Alex, LOL: a teenager who is too glued to his smartphone and is oblivious of the world around him.
35 to 50 years old, Hispanic male-presenting. Covers the following four characters-
Jake, Reisman!: Not a professor. From Chicago where he was RICK’S college roommate. Animated in his speech and is enthusiastic about the events of the play.;
Milton, The Milton Fernsby Story: An upper class husband with a secret, Married to Marigold;
Mel, State Park: a boyfriend with a one track mind who is learning about the world of meditation;
Prufrock, Prufrock in the Park: an English gentleman wearing a bowler hat who represents the literary character J. Alfred Prufrock in the poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"
60 to 75 years old, Black male-presenting. Covers the following four characters-
Rick, Reisman!: Senior Professor in the Rhetoric Department, has not advanced through the academic ranks easily, as he had assumed he would. A naturally gifted speaker from outside the San Francisco Bay Area.
Johnny, Coconuts and Candles: a grumpy WW2 veteran reminiscing on old love stories
Glenway, The Milton Fernsby Story: a quiet spoken upper class husband. Married to Petunia
Sam, LOL: an older man with a heart condition, non-speaking.
18 to 30 years old, all ethnicities female-presenting (BIPOC/AAPI strongly encouraged). Covers the following four characters-
Woman, Anti-Soulmate: an unsuspecting woman who finds her soulmate despite not believing in soulmates;
Kathy, I Saw What You Said: a young mother caught up in Facebook drama;
Pat, State Park: a girlfriend who is introducing her boyfriend to the world of meditation;
Pat, LOL: a teenage boy who is too glued to his smartphone and is oblivious of the world around him.
35 to 50 years old, Black female-presenting. Covers the following four characters-
Earnestine, Reisman!: Senior Professor in American Studies and English, quickly advanced in her academic career. Assured. Originally from Tougaloo, Mississippi. Southern Accent Preferred.
Shirley, Coconuts and Candles: a funny, gregarious retired military nurse. Southern Accent Preferred
Marigold, The Milton Fernsby Story: an over-the-top, short-tempered upper class housewife. Married to Milton.
Britt, I Saw What You Said: a conservative mother who is not afraid of sharing her opinions
60 to 75 years old, all ethnicities female-presenting (BIPOC/AAPI strongly encouraged). Covers the following three characters-
Mitzi, Coconuts and Candles: a cheery and kind retired military nurse reminiscing on love stories of the past.
Petunia, The Milton Fernsby Story: an upper class wife who is not great at reading social cues. Married to Glenway.
Policewoman, LOL: a stern policewoman investigating a murder
